FAQ
FAQ
Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions about our brother and the film. We hope this information helps and alleviates any concerns. Our goal is to be transparent and to answer all your questions.
Why do you want to find your brother?
Because we need to speak to him, and that is very urgent. This because of a medical condition in our family which he may also have inherited.
Where can I see the film?
We keep you updated on this website. (for professionals: to request a link to a preview copy you can use the contact form).
In the film, there’s constantly an otter walking through the frame—why is that?
To be honest, we don’t actually know either. Although it is a cute animal in itself, it was quite annoying
that it kept walking through the shots. An otter with a need to assert itself — that surprised us too.
What is your brother’s real name?
We’d rather not say, for privacy reasons.
Why does your brother keep leaving?
As we said in the film, we don’t know. But it seems obvious that
it’s restlessness — running from something, probably his feelings.
In the film, you talk about the father and the police — what exactly happened?
My sister and I agreed not to talk about it publicly anymore. But it was very bad, violent and traumatic.
Is the chicken farmer really such an unpleasant man in real life, too?
My sister and I think so, but of course, that’s a matter of perception.
In the film, it is mentioned that Yumi, the former supermodel, is a successful entrepreneur. What exactly does she do?
Among other ventures, she runs her own clothing and perfume brands and is active in real estate.
In the film, your brother plays the violin. Are there any recordings of this?
Yes, but only from when he had just started learning to play. You can listen HERE
In the film, it’s suggested that your brother might be homosexual — is that true?
A bit of a strange question, what does it matter?
What did your brother mean by the question on Albert Einstein, of whether relativity also applies to human life?
He probably meant it in a scientific sense, but perhaps also metaphorically: just as time and space are relative in Einstein’s theory, so too is human life a matter of perspective. Experiences, emotions, and opinions are never absolute—they always depend on who is experiencing them and from which context.
Did Einstein write your brother a reply?
Unfortunately, we don’t know.
In the film, you mention that Dr. Jane Tosyn, the astrophysicist, missed out on the Nobel Prize because her male colleague took the credit. Has this been rectified since?
Unfortunately, no. This is an example of the Matilda Effect, where women’s scientific contributions are systematically overlooked while male colleagues receive the credit. It is named after 19th-century American feminist Matilda Josyln Gage, who first highlighted this phenomenon.
In the film we see your brother dancing with an okapi. What’s his connection to it?
We believe the okapi was there purely by coincidence, but a lovely one — it actually happens to be one of his favourite animals.
Our brother collects books about this remarkable animal. Here are a few of his favourites:
-Vote for the Okapi (in Dutch)
-Discovering the Okapi (in English)
-The Okapi: Mysterious Animal of Congo‑Zaire (in English)
Your brother wrote a book about non-duality. But what is that, exactly?
In short, non-duality is the insight that the separation between self and other is an illusion, and that everything is fundamentally interconnected.
Doesn’t everyone have a mobile phone, social media, and so on,
it shouldn’t be that hard to find your brother, right?
Yes, that’s true — only our brother doesn’t have any of that (a deliberate choice on his part).
I read under "Publications and Other Media" that the former supermodel Yumi donated signed photos of herself. These photos were taken by photographer Eric Alterson, who was convicted of severe sexual offenses. You are asking the public whether these photos should be sold in the webshop or not, have you received any responses yet?
One of the main questions is, should we separate the artist from the art? We have received quite a few responses, and opinions vary widely. We will be publishing them on the website soon. More info can be found HERE.
In the film, the characters look different from scene to scene — can you explain why?
Of course. We believe in interpersonal diversity, and we don’t see people as being bound to a single fixed appearance. A person is never just one version of themselves; identity shifts depending on time, place, memory, and perspective. By allowing the characters to change visually, we emphasize that fluidity and show that people cannot be reduced to one image, one body, or one “correct” way of looking.
In the film, there are chickens and goats smoking. Isn’t that very unhealthy?
Yes, it’s very unhealthy for these animals as well.
I’m a 12-year-old boy, and a few older boys at school are bullying me. It’s really affecting me, but I’m too afraid to tell anyone. What should I do?
We are really sorry that you’re going through this. Since we’re not professional caregivers, we have to be a bit careful with giving advice. But we can say this: we strongly encourage you to talk to someone, even though it feels difficult. For example, you can tell your parents, but you can also talk to your mentor or the school’s confidential counselor. Together, you can look for a solution. Your parents can also take steps to help stop the bullying, such as contacting the school administration. More info, click HERE.
Is it now clear what went wrong during your brother’s trip to the moon?
It seems there was a short circuit; unfortunately, we don’t know any more than that.
In your shop you sell woolly mammoth hair — how can I be sure it is authentic?”
We have no reason to believe that our brother accidentally brought back hair from another animal during one of his time travels. The highly respected paleontologist Ernst van der Weest shares this view and has studied the hair extensively. HERE more information about Ernst van der Weest.
How is it possible that your brother spoke with the space dog Laika? She had been dead for decades by then, right?
Yes, that’s indeed what is written, including on Wikipedia. But we have no reason to doubt our brother’s words — he has always been completely honest.
Your brother was a painter and experimented in other media as well. Which artists influenced him?
He had a very wide-ranging taste, experimented with different styles and media and carefully studied artists such as, Kurt Schwitters, Meret Oppenheim, Caravaggio, Jan Mankes, Willem de Kooning, Whistler, Elsa von Freytag Loringhoven, Mondrian, Georgia O'Keefe.
There are rumors that your brother was also near planet Solaris when he was in space. Couldn’t that explain his 'strange' behavior?
Yes, we know that rumor. To be completely honest, we don’t know whether it’s true. It is the case that Solaris can have strange effects on the human mind. It’s a bit too complicated to explain here, but for anyone who wants to know more, here some links: SOLARIS. The great filmmaker Tarkovsky made a film about this planet and it's influence, you can watch this masterpiece HERE.
